I come from a family of individuals that aren't afraid to speak their mind. Believe me our mouths have gotten us in trouble a time or two. My sister and I take our turns on our soapboxes whenever we speak. So I'll take this opportunity to speak my mind.
Because of medical bills, medication and physical therapy for my son, a large amount of our income goes towards these expenses. I figured it all out one time and if we didn't spend so much on medical we would have ...well let's just say we would be a lot more comfortable.
So... i'll give you the rundown. I believe in the corruption of government officials, pharmaceutical companies, and health care insurance companies. One of my favorite documentaries is called Sicko by Michael Moore. This movie is the essence of my "conspiracy" talks with my sis. If you haven't seen this film you really should. Here are some key points from the film:
1) There are nearly 50 million Americans without health insurance.
The amount of uninsured is rising every year, as premiums continue to skyrocket and wages stagnate.
2) 18,000 Americans will die this year simply because they're uninsured.
3) Canadians, Brits, and the French live longer than we do.
4) Drugs in England only cost $10.
5) In Britain the NHS (National Health Insurance) was set up in 1948 and is now the largest organization in Europe. It is recognized as one of the best health services in the world by the World Health Organization.
6) In a study of older Americans and Brits, the Brits had less of almost every major disease. Even the poorest Brit can expect to live longer than the richest American.
7) Did you know that it's free to see a doctor, have brain surgery, treat cancer, go to a dentist, etc. in most of Europe, Canada, France, and many other countries. Even Cuba has a better national health care system then the US.
8) In 1996 Hilary Clinton started a campaign for socialized health care in the US but after the "Health Industry" spent over $100 million to shut her up, they succeeded and now she has the largest amount of contributions from the "Health Industry" in history.
Contributions from the Health Industry - 2008 Election Cycle
HMOs, pharmaceutical companies, physicians and other health professionals.
Hillary Clinton $3,762,112
Barack Obama $2,727,970
John McCain $1,080,619
I believe that our nation should take care of us better. We should have a national medical care program that is free for all for life. Why not? It works for our postal service, libraries, school system,
fire departments, and police departments.
Could you imagine if your house was on fire and the fire department came to put out the fire but stopped first and said "that will be $600 for the use of our hoses, and $2,000 for labor. Oh and if you want your grandma pulled out of the blaze that's another $12,000."And if you didn't have a way to pay for these services they'd let your house burn down with grandma inside.
Is this scenario hard to believe? That's how non-Americans think when they hear about someone being denied a life saving surgery or hearing about a 18 month old baby being turned away at the ER door because they needed to be at an "in-network" hospital. The child died a few hours later. It's criminal, and just sick and wrong.
So before I step down from my box, let's do something about this. Let's write, call, and email our state representatives/ congressperson. You better believe I'll be doing this myself.
Click the link below and find out how.
What can I do?
